In this video I show you how to take some dead wood from the neighborhood park and turn it into fire without the aid of modern luxuries. I construct a primitive bow drill fire set out of the wood I collected. Check it out.
The wood I collected was from the Quake Aspen Tree. While I was walking through the Aspen grove with my dog I noticed several pieces of wood that looked perfect for making a Primitive Bow Drill Fire Set. So I challenged myself to create a primitive fire using only the 3 pieces of wood I gathered from the grove. There are many different wood combinations that work well and many that do not.
Once you have the basics of construction down then it all comes down to type of woods that work well together. I recommend that you practice with many different wood combinations from your local area or the area where you plan on using this skill.
I have spent several hours trying to make fire with certain wood combos with no luck and only minutes using others to create a strong coal.
Here in Southern California I have used the following so far.
Willow Fireboard + Willow Drill
Willow Fireboard + Mule Fat Drill
Quake Aspen Fireboard + Quake Aspen Drill
Quake Aspen Fireboard + Mule Fat Drill
Willow Fireboard + Quake Aspen Drill
