What Are Pace Counting Beads

Pace counting beads (aka. Ranger Beads) are a distance estimating tool that is typically made of paracord and 14 beads. It is used in conjunction with your 100m pace count to estimate and keep track of distance covered while navigating.

How do I make them?

Materials Needed:

Step 1:
Cut a length of 550 paracord to 28″.

Step 2:
Remove all of the inner strands of cordage (white color) and set all of them aside except for one strand. You should now have a hollow strand of paracord. Cauterize both ends of the paracord shell to prevent fraying.

Step 3: 
Fold the paracord in half and tie an overhand knot at the end where both loose ends are.

Step 4: 
Loop your strand of gut material through the non-knotted end of the paracord and make them even. Take 9 beads and run the gut string through the middle of them. Once all 9 are on the white gut string pull the beads onto the paracord and slide them all the way down to the knot. ** Note – Beads should be snug on the paracord so they won’t slide on their own.

Step 5: 
Measure 1.5″-2″ (or two finger width) from the last of the 9 beads and tie another overhand knot.

Step 6: 
Just like step 4 loop your strand of gut material through the non-knotted end of the paracord and make them even. Take 5 beads and run the gut string through the middle of them. Once all 5 are on the white gut string pull the beads onto the paracord and slide them all the way down to the second knot.

Step 7: 
Like step 5 measure 1.5″-2″ (or two finger width) from the last of the 5 beads and tie another overhand knot. You should now have a loop at the end of the bead set. This loop will allow you to attach the bead set to your pack strap or wherever you want to attach it.

How do I use them?

Step 1:
You will first need to determine your 100m pace count. To do so you will need to measure out 100m or use and pre measured track at a school. Stand at the starting line and take a step with the left foot first, then right. Overtime the right foot touched the ground you will count. Using an average walking pace, keep counting all the way until you hit the end marker. Take note of your pace number.

To make sure this is accurate I would repeat this 4 times and then average your numbers.
This is your pace count. Remember it.

Step 2:
Hold or attach your beads so the loop and the 5 bead section is on the top, nine bead section on bottom. Make sure all beads are slid up and touching the know above them.

Step 3:
Start navigating and keeping track of your pace count. When you hit your Pace Count Number that you determined earlier you will slide the first of the 9 beads down to the know below it. You have now gone 100m. Keep repeating this until you move the 9th bead down. You have now gone 900m. On the tenth count you will move the last bead on the top section down to the knot below it. You have now gone 1000m. Reset the 9 beads to the knot above and repeat this process. You can keep this up until you hit 5000m. Once 5000m has been reached you will need to reset the 5 beads on top by sliding them back to the know above them.

There you have it. a simple way to track distance using pace beads and pace count.
